Chief of Course

The Chief of Course oversees the safe and timely operation of the Solo II course. You are also responsible for providing starting signals, observation of competing cars on course, observing cars that are red flagged, directing cars off course at the conclusion of a run and assisting the Chief of Safety with crowd control. In addition, you are responsible for insuring that in the case of incident or accident on the course, that the available manpower under your supervision is utilized to expedite a return to completion. You work directly with the Chief Steward and Chief of Safety on matters of general safety, crowd control, and worker and driver safety.

The Chief of Course monitors the number of cars on course at any one time and insures that the maximum number of cars on the course is maintained with the utmost consideration for safety. This area is particularly critical with the large number of cars to turn in any one day. The delay of a few seconds per car, multiplied by the number of cars multiplied by the number of runs can result in an inordinate amount of time to complete the day’s event. The Chief of Course directly supervises the starter.

Responsibility also falls on the Chief of Course to monitor the timely and accurate movement of cars to grid. It is also critical to move the cars from grid to impound promptly.

The following people are under your direct control: all persons working staging, start line, and the course. Coordinate with the Chief of Workers that adequate workers have been assigned to each station and that they have been adequately trained and equipped.

You will be the liaison with Timing and Scoring. You will handle all questions for them. No one should be around the Timing and Scoring vehicle without your permission while the event is running.

Notes to Remember:

  1. It is important that all times are posted and audited before the next runs are permitted. Be sure Chief of Timing and Scoring has given you the go ahead before you tell grid to send the cars to the start line.
  2. Make sure that there is an adequate supply of radios and that they are in working condition.
  3. Make sure that all the equipment is at the worker stations and that the course is relined when needed.
